Doesn't He Have Anything Better To Do?

Amidst perhaps the greatest judicial crisis in our country's history, acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas is ruling on...this:

Ibrarul Haq was summoned to the Supreme Court in Islamabad over his song that apparently contained words "Parveen you are so salty".

The move came after a girl called Parveen had claimed that the lyrics embarrassed her and her family.

But Mr Haq said the song did not use the name Parveen but Parmeen - which is not a recognised name in Pakistan.

"It's a misunderstanding - the general public has misunderstood... it's not my fault," Mr Haq said.

...

Parveen is a common name in Pakistan, and a number of girls are reported to have been teased about the song's words.

The court case began after a university student from Lahore called Parveen wrote to Pakistan's acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas, claiming that Mr Haq's lyrics embarrassed her.

The song has proved to be a hit in Pakistan, with roadside stalls and cafes playing it repeatedly.

"This matter is very sensitive and such things cannot be allowed in Pakistani society," Mr Bhagwandas was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

"Nobody can be allowed to hurt the sentiments of others," he said.

I just have one question. "Parveen you are so salty"? Seriously?

How about quoting the song lyrics in whatever original language it is sung in?

I guess it is Panjabi which I am told is a very salty language.

hahahahaha. i haven't heard the song (now i'm opening up myself to accusations from all pakistani readers of being a snooty prick) so i can't tell you what language it's in. however, the urdu word for salty is "namkeen" which, as you can surmise, rhymes with parveen. not to mention parmeen.

Yeah the lyrics are pretty raunchy, it goes like..

oh Parveen, baree namkeen
oh Parveen, baree shawkeen

And its actually based on an old Punjabi folktale of this Parveen chick who's family can't keep her under control.

Thanks for the response.

I found the song on Youtube:
Ne Parveen (Permeen) too bari namkeen by Abrar ul Haq

At least now we can see why Mushy wants a nice guy like Bhagwandas as CJ!

Excerpt from Pakistani pop star told to cut girl's name from song
Wed May 30, 2007 9:10AM EDT

"The court has asked Abrar-ul-Haq to omit the name of the girl and some other objectionable words in his lyrics," the court official said.

Haq, a well-known singer of Punjabi bhangra tunes, said he would abide by the court decision.

Did you know Abrar-ul-Haq's surname is Haq?

i love it when courts/politicians/media/keepers of the peace try to control what we listen to/watch/read. they are completely oblivious to the fact that NOTHING, and i mean nothing, can help a song/video game/movie/painting/book more than the notoriety that these people grant it. abrar is LOVING this shit. he's going to be a billionaire because of that idiot girl and this idiot court. it was the same with rushdie and satanic verses. same with rap songs denigrating women. same with really violent video games. as i see it, everyone wins here. the court feels good. the stupid girl feels good. and abrar feels really, really, really fucking good.
