Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Political Scientist And IR Theorist
You've heard of Francis Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington. I now present to you Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, mover and shaker extraordinaire.
Many theories of international relations have seen the light of day in the last decades. The 'End of History' thesis for one: It believed that with the success of Pax Americana and liberal capitalist democracy over other systems, the world was entering a 'golden age of peace and human happiness.' 9/11 destroyed this thesis and the 'Clash of Civilization' thesis of the past became popular. Here Islam and the West were portrayed as being engaged in a struggle that some even called World War 3. However, in the current situation this theory too has faded and in my opinion the world is locked in a 'conflict of fanaticism'.Here's hoping I never have to compete with such eminent brilliance in the academic job market.

And correct me here, but isn't the clash of civilizations rather recent as opposed to being lumped with a 'thesis of the past'?

I still dont see how this quote is infinitely stupid or anything.
And the original paper by Huntington entitled "Clash of Civilisations" is pretty old, early 90's I think. It can be referred to an an older thesis which is more in vogue now, though obviously not older than Fukiyama's.
So are you making fun of him because he implies that Huntington's piece came before Fukiyama's (when it was really a response to the latter)? Or are you making fun of the fact that he oversimplifies it (its not an erroneous oversimplification).
Anyway, I didnt get what the big deal was.

perhaps the release of BB's last book has prompted a jump onto the intellectual bandwagon... albeit one in which he actually misses the wagon altogether and instead lands face first in cow droppings.

Afrasiyab, when I saw the title and author, I immediately figured that Mushahid Hussain wrote the article.
The real Shujaat probably thinks Pax Americana is a continent and the End of History marks the beginning of Qiyamat.
