hahah grad student, $600 last year! damn, and i've been flirting with the idea of a 2nd masters and then a phd.. :(

not all of us make as little as 600 dollars a year (unless of course you're in the history dept at U of C...then you're fucked). but i would say that especially in the U.S. (don't know how it works elsewhere) you have to REALLY love what you do. it's 5-8 yrs of utter poverty and a ridiculously low standard of living. this is excluding all the work of course and the professional difficulties inherent in the process of getting a PhD.
and yeah, with the plane: i was once on a plane when it was landing in really windy conditions in new york (though not nearly as blustery as in this video) and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. a plane landing in windy/rainy conditions is FUCKING freaky.
