I wanted to drop you a note and tell you that I have been reading your blog Five Rupees regularly for the past 8 months. (welcome bubs, your posts are great!)
I am an admitted outspoken American woman who happens to work with a few very fine Pakistani factories located in Karachi.
This isn't the appropriate location to leave this post so please pardon my blogging ignorance. But I felt it was worthwhile to let you know that over the course of the past 8 months of reading your blogs I have gained a lot of insight and a much better understanding of the Pakistani culture. At times your writing has broken my heart, made me smile or just have a good laugh. And I thank you for that!
In June of 2007 I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a week in Karachi working with my factories, visiting a few markets and risking a day trip to Baluchistan to visit a school in Vinder. All of which has impacted my life and changed who I am as a person. Believe me, it scared the hell out of me to come to Karachi, especially with the stability issues at that time, but I was determined and very glad in the end that I made the trip. My husband was probably more nervous than I but very supportive of my trip.
I have to tell you that my trip was eye opening and heart warming at the same time. Being the foreigner humbled me beyond words. Yes I am the typical American woman with pasty white skin, dark hair wishing to be blonde so I’ve added a few highlights, and wear jeans pretty much everywhere I go.
I've read the comments here and there about your stated views of the limited audience that your blog reaches, but I want you to know that you have an audience much greater than you may realize.
I have 2 small children (7 & 11) and I share with them my experiences in Pakistan and other countries that I've had the privilege to visit. I share as much as I can with my children in hopes that they will not become the typical home grown, self serving American rednecks that frankly make me ashamed at times to call myself an American. George Bush being at the top of that list. Yes I despise that man because he does not represent me or my views in any way shape or form and I refuse to grant him the honor of calling him the president. I honestly hope for the day war crimes charges are brought against that man.
In the world we find ourselves in today I want my children to grow to see beyond boundaries and into the hearts of everyone they meet and actually try to make a difference in the world.
Anyhow, thank you for keeping up your blog.
I have an opportunity to return to Karachi sometime in the near future and I hope I am able to do so. Insha Ala I’ll be back soon.
