Snarky Comment Of The Day
I'm sorry for the slightly smutty direction this blog has taken recently, what with NB's post on hot-sex-aunties-saturday-mobile-defence-karachi and my post on John McCain and his MILF veep. And after this post, I promise to abide by a brief moratorium on such gutter material - Ramazan has started, after all. I simply can not, however, resist posting this comment from a post on Slog which showed a picture of a "GOP hottie" - i.e. someone (somehow) both attractive and Republican at the same time - attending the convention this week. Hereunder is the picture.
And hereunder is the comment that I could not resist posting.

Her outfit's ugly, and he looks beyond stupid. I bet their first date was him getting his tips frosted, then they went tanning in adjacent beds, before sneaking out to his dad's back 40 to fuck in the back of his Blazer-- but only in the ass, because that way she's still a virgin. Not that I think they look stupid or anything.

Have you noticed that the conservative blogs feature t-shirt ads with girls that look like this one? They are very skinny and have a very youthful face.
Culturally, I think most white males in America have an infatuation with intercourse with underage women. It probably goes back to some European tradition back when they bathed twice a year.
Nowadays, if their SAT score is high enough, they choose legal East Asian women instead.
I would venture to say there's very little conservative about these ladies beyond xenophobia and gun loving. It's the Palin-type of conservatism. Oh hey, yea my teen got knocked up by a guy she was dating for a few months, but at least she didn't abort the kid!
"I would venture to say there's very little conservative about these ladies beyond xenophobia and gun loving"
Yeah, whereas the rest of the Republican party is so traditionally conservative when it comes to reduced spending, foreign non-interventionism, etc.

I think what you touched on is something that should be made more explicit in the political discourse: that modern day conservatism, at least in the U.S., has become synonymous with the most vile xenophobia/racism/jingoism you can imagine in a mainstream political party in a developed country. This is too bad, because while I disagree with a lot of traditional conservatism as an intellectual philosophy, I agree with quite a bit too. And in any event, it's an important intellectual debate to have. No matter what, the Hayeks, Buckleys, and Friedmans of the world may be a lot of things, but they are not stupid. We are all poorer for the slide into anti-intellectual populism by the GOP.
Rabia: Yup. The reduce spending/foreign non-interventionism guy - Ron Paul - was laughed out of the race by the GOP and conservative establishment. That sort of thing simply doesn't stand any more.

what's actually really interested me for the last 7 years is how easy it has been for so-called libertarians or classical liberals to willingly give up all vigilance on individual rights when confronted with the threat of islamic terrorism. I don't know if you've been reading Glenn Greenwald's coverage of the pre-emptive raids in Minneapolis over the weekend before the RNC, but it's really appalling how little coverage this issue is getting.
rabia, i share your sentiments. no need to be an ass.
anonymous: sorry, I'm just senselessly confrontational sometimes.
Rabia:
Yeah I've been reading (well, skimming) Greenwald. He's the best when it comes to this type of stuff; if only he knew how to write (or had an editor).
Ahsan wrote, "modern day conservatism, at least in the U.S., has become synonymous with the most vile xenophobia/racism/jingoism you can imagine in a mainstream political party in a developed country."
That is totally absurd. Just one quick example: Look at illegal immigration during the period that the Republican party was dominant in the U.S. During this 2001-2006 period, illegal immigration not only didn't slow down but actually accelerated. Your "most vile xenophobia/racism" party would never have allowed that.
Most Americans classify themselves as conservatives, yet over 52% of the population voted for a black man. If you think that American conservatives are "the most vile xenophobia/racism/jingoism," you need to study the Third Reich more.
