Husain Haqqani On The Daily Show
I thought he did a pretty good job, except for the whole "trying to make Zardari sound like an adroit and cunning strategist when in fact he's a dipshit with no college education, no sense of shame, and no skills whatsoever save an ability to aggrandize power and siphon off cash to foreign bank accounts" bit.

Fine, he didn't do a bad job, but I cannot STAND the man during interviews. He is so pompous and he loves the spotlight. His ambassador position has been completely self-serving.
It is interesting that no American finds Husain Haqqani pompous and some Pakistanis do. Even in the recent New York Times article the only people to throw mud at him were fellow Pakistanis. Anyone remember the joke about why there would be no guards outside the pit in hell with Pakistanis. Because one of us will pull his leg himself if he is about to rise out of hell.Does the hostility to Haqqani have to do with (a) the man being self made in a society that is class and status based? (b) the man having risen through his wits in a country where almost nobody rises that way? (c) the man being a Muhajir from Karachi and therefore an irritant for every sub-consciously prejudiced Punjabi? (d) The man having changed his views in a country where supposedly honourable people do not change views and parties (even though everyone from Quaid-e-Azam to Bhutto to Nawaz Sharif has been in many parties in their lifetime)? (e) the man doing his job well on behalf of a party and government that is otherwise not very successful?
Thanks, Husain. In the last sentence, you basically admitted your party and government suck.
I dont know why my friend thinks I am Husain Haqqani. If he or she cares to look up my IP address they will realize that I live in Boston and Ambassador Haqqani lives in DC. That should be proof enough ...
Ismail,
While living in Boston were you ever Haqqani's student prior to his ambassador posting?
I came to Boston in Fall 2008 so no I have never studied under Amb Haqqani as he was already in DC by then.
I just finished watching The Daily Show and had to immediately come on to see if you had posted about Husain Haqqani! I thought he spoke well and interjected some nice humour into his conversation with Stewart. In short, I was pleasantly surprised. Well, apart from his characterization of Zardari as a shrewd strategist, which is a load of crock.
Husain, you are logged on from your Boston University VPN, which you use to check your Boston University email account, which you still use.
are you people idiots?
how is zardari NOT a shrewd strategist? he is still in power, he has the whole western world wondering if he's crazy yet still supporting him, he has the judges back while still holding on to his job, he is the fucking craziest muthafucka ever to hold power. yes he may not be the president your pol sci teacher taught you about, but really, zardari is a legend - in a charles manson sort of a way.
"well that is a million dollar question, and i am hoping the answer will be in billions of dollars"
AAZ is putting the sic back into classic, he's bringing sexy back...
Karachi Khatmal:
No offense but I think you are being a bit delusional.
AAZ is not shrewd STRATEGIST but is a shrewd crook. I don’t think he negotiated with the Taliban to prove that they can’t be negotiated with! He should have known that already frankly. And if this bullshit reverse psychology was his aim (as Haqqani claims it was) its pretty damn costly for the Pakistani people, especially the IDPs. I’m sure there could have been other ways Zardari could have highlighted the fact that the Taliban won’t keep their end of the deal.
The United States is supporting him because he is unfortunately the Pakistani government and they have to. Especially since they are the ones who called the Pakistani elections free and fair.
The judges are back but against his will.
Also, he wants billions of dollars, which Pakistan needs but I am skeptical if that money will ever get to the Pakistani population and meet its needs. Let’s see how much he skims off from the top.

Well it does seem that the Swat peace deal was nothing more than a trick to lure the Taliban from the mountains and countryside to the main towns.
It is much easier now for the Pakistani military to kill or capture the Taliban since they are now in the open, instead of hiding in the mountains.
The results can be seen these days in the Pakistani military operation Black Thunderstorm in the Swat Valley, which has led to the capture or assassination of over 1000 Taliban militants.
It's easy to say 'he's a dipshit with no college education, no sense of shame, and no skills whatsoever save an ability to aggrandize power and siphon off cash to foreign bank accounts', but the fact that he has brought more financial aid to Pakistan than any other president before goes unnoticed of course. Financial aid that this country needs more than ever, especially in the current economic crunch. How is it so easy to bash a man into the ground and never realize the kind of pressure he's under to run a country facing so many difficulties?!
