In anticipation of the upcoming season of Lost (10 days to go), take a look at this blog post listing the top 5 conservative characters on the show. Were it not for the dead-giveaway earnest tone, I would really have thought it was a parody of right-wing idiocy. Sawyer's conservatism includes such shining examples of humanity as his refusal to share food and his snap judgment that Sayid is a terrorist because of his ethnicity. But at least the writer, Ben Shapiro, acknowledges that Dick Cheney is evil. Here is his appreciation of Ben:
Speaking of projecting your beliefs onto fictional characters, a gay writer at the London Times makes a far more convincing case that Tintin is gay and expresses shock that everyone else didn't come to the same conclusion. I admit the thought never occurred to me, but it has been 25 years since I read Tintin.
George W. Bush has done many disgusting things over the past eight years but nothing matches the small-mindedness of this:
Benry is evil to be sure – but he’s pure, solid, wonderful evil in the mold of Dick Cheney. He’s a conniving, backstabbing, brilliant leader, a guy who will do anything to win...

George W. Bush has done many disgusting things over the past eight years but nothing matches the small-mindedness of this:
A great sign of what a petty, stupid, immoral man George W. Bush is has been his treatment of the Obama family’s request that they be allowed to stay in Blair House for the two weeks before inauguration so that Sasha and Malia could start school on time. Bush turned them down, citing the need for Blair House to host a guest for one night, thus forcing the Obama’s into a hotel and causing various inconveniences to the people of Washington and to the taxpayer as security arrangements needed to be made.
Fittingly enough, it seems that there was no genuine guest scheduled to stay in Blair House. Rather, the Bush administration asked former Australian Prime Minister John Howard to stay at the place in order to give them a pretext to turn the Obamas down.
Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer may have greater reason for his pettiness but it certainly isn't justification for censorship. A bunch of blogs posted personal photographs of the governor and his family - a gross invasion of privacy for sure. But Taseer responded by banning those websites, a far greater evil by far.
I just love the opening sentence in the Times of India's story about Obama's pick of Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon-General (via The Corner)
It is one senior US administration post that has had 'Indian' written on it for many years.
File this under the annals of hideously exploitiative. A blogger who writes about Rolex watches on website of a jewelery shop believes the watch was responsible for saving the life of actor Owen Wilson (via The Onion).
A People magazine cover story out Friday quotes a friend as saying: “Owen was very despondent. He slit his wrists. He almost did not make it.” It was a dark period in Wilson life, and Rolex played a key role in helping Owen regain his bearings and his success...After returning home from the hospital, Owen was captured by a photographer walking on the beach, wearing his Rolex Submariner. Later, he was seen riding his mountain bike in Santa Monica with the Rolex Submariner on his wrist. Obviously, the quality of a Rolex watch helped Owen realize and appreciate the quality of his own life...Whatever the hawks of the media choose to write, it is clear that Rolex played a major role in Owen Wilson’s recovery. Back in good form, the actor is nothing less than a comic genius in a time when comedy is a necessity. Wearing a Rolex Submariner and attending Rolex Benefits helped Owen Wilson realize his life was valuable and worth living. Once again, the precision and quality of a Rolex proves to be a lifesaver in more ways than one.
And finally, if you want to know why everyone makes such a fuss about the intricate, complex, beautifully woven world of The Wire, but don't want to make the effort to watch all five seasons of the dense show, this rap song will explain everything in just five minutes.

Ben Shapiro is the opposite of Slumdog Millionaire.
It boggles the mind how a person who finished top of his class at UCLA and attended Harvard Law School at the age of 20 could be such an ignoramus.
I've just read a number of his columns and its made me so very angry.
Okay, so maybe I should've said that he's the opposite of Jamal Malik, the intrepid and wise hero of Slumdog Millionaire.
By the way, has anyone else watched this film? Am I the only one who felt thatit wasn't an up-lifiting tale, as depicted in most movie reviews? The film was highly enjoyable but quite distressing and the ending didn't make this feeling go away.
@AKS
I watched slumdog millionaire too and I thought it was pretty amazing. I don't think it was uplifting, but more cathartic in many ways. Like, when I left the theatre I remember feeling extremely grateful about my life (a feeling I don't have very often). But yes, I admit that the next day I was definitely haunted by the creepy smile of that guy who played the beggar master. I don't think the movie was trying to make a point though about anything. I liked that it didn't have this air of moral preaching self righteousness or whatever. Anyway now I'm rambling! :)
It is a hard to resist movie not because it got four golden globe awards- best screenplay, movie, direction and A.R. Rehman got the award for best music but because it has showed the real India, India of extreme poverty. Danny boyle, the director of the movie has captured the grim reality of life in slums of India.Apart from the amazing music, brilliant acting of Anil Kapoor as devious quiz show host and Irfan Khan as a sadistic detective, agreeable performances of Dev Patel as Jamal and his love interest,Latika played by Frieda Pinto,I was captivated by the beauty of Taj Mahal.I would certainly recommend watching the movie.
I agree with aks that movie is distressing.I was stunned by the poverty and plight of people living in slums of India. The scene when child dived into potty to get Amitabh Bachchan's autograph was nauseating. It was scary to see how Bombay riots had orphaned Jamal; how underworld don who has children's eyes gouged out so that they can earn more as beggars. Even on television show,Jamal was taunted as chaiwallah by the KBC host. Lastly, he was given the 'third degree' in a police station because the cops are sure the slum kid has cheated on the game show. It is undoubtedly true that slum children get life's rawest deal and the movie has beautifully captured this reality.
Yeah, I loved Slumdog Millionaire but not having read any reviews before watching it, I wasn't expecting anything uplifting from the director of Trainspotting. But if I were to recommend one Oscar movie it would be The Wrestler. Darren Aronosfky's other movies have been too painful too watch more than once. I'm thinking of Requiem for a Dream in particular, which was so emotionally devastating, I had trouble sleeping after watching it. But The Wrestler, while typically odd, has a heart to it that none of Aronofsky's previous films did. Also, skip Benjamin Button. it's really not that good.
i want to watch slumdog millionaire but i take it from a lot of reviews lately that it isn't quite the ''feel good film of the century'' as marketed. still it picked up a golden globe (or was it two) - so can't be that bad.
speaking of lost, i can't wait for the season premiere, it'll be a double episode too. :)
i watched 24's premiere last night and was quite disappointed, they kind of downplayed almeida's return from the dead and the rest was predictable, no wayne palmer and i'm not a big fan of the new president, she makes the show a complete snorefest.
i am anticipating the 'senegali''(what was the name again?) war and the evil president juma (aka. candyman) - as opposed to zimbabwe and mugabe.
gotta love how they have iconic actors play baddies, like how they had habib marwan aka. the mummy in it.
the new ctu male and female agents look pretty interesting so far, they may be the next milo and nadia, but can never be the next michelle and tony.
actually a palestinian friend of mine called ebrahem haddad was pretty p*ssed off during the opening court scene, they certainly choose the names well, haha..
ok, i shall stop rambling now.
