Wow. I'm trying to think of what drugs he was on before he went on that show. I'm going with heroin, with acid a dark horse.
Apparently Pheonix has been doing a lot of weird stuff lately and having all of it filmed, so a lot of people are suggesting he's making some kind of mock-documentary. But that wouldn't be any fun at all so I'm going to second your heroin suggestion.
i'm dead impressed by how letterman handled it and coaxed him into some level of involvement.
Fuck CBS broadcasting and their copyright claims. Fuck them and their mothers.

Adeel: I've never really watched Letterman so I don't know if he's usually this brilliant. But after a bit of Googling, I've come to the conclusion that he is a genius at handling awkward interviews. Here are some links that are well worth watching.
